If so, they work fine. I have an ETM ER-40 chuck like that and an ER-32 chuck that fits Tormach's TTS system. Both work well. The ER-32 slips out of the TTS 3/4" R8 holder easier for bit changes. The ETM one requires a spindle wrench up top to hold the spindle still while I loosen and tighten the ER chuck nut down below.

09-10-2009, 03:56 PM. A big difference is ER collets are primarily tool holding, while 5C's are primarily work holding. I have never seen a commercially made lathe setup for ER collets in the spindle from the factory. 5C in the spindle is very common on everything from small hobby lathes to full scale production machines.

1st question: R8 collets vs. ER40 Collets
Consider that one 50-taper chuck weighs 15-20 lbs without any tool, and a 40-taper weighs less than 5 lbs. Huge difference. And a pissant R8 weighs ounces. ER-40 holds big tools, it's forgiving on diameters, it has friggin' gobs of grip. I use them all the time on a 20 hp horizontal mill at work.

ER collets have very low TIR, usually around 0.0002", and the R8 holders are around 0.0001". Shar's has some decent nickle plated ER holders that are reasonably priced, they are nicely made and accurate. You can use a ball bearing cinching nut to make collet changes a bit quicker and requires less force to tighten.
