Is Iron Smelting A Chemical Process?

Smelting is often described simply as a melting process, but it is actually a chemical reaction. Iron ore doesn't feature chunks of iron embedded in rock, but a complex chemical compound. In smelting, a technician uses heat and a reducing agent to catalyze a chemical reaction that frees the iron so it can be extracted.

Smelting

Smelting is a process in which the base metal is extracted from the ore by applying heat to it. It is one kind of extractive metallurgy. It is used for the extraction of many metals like copper, aluminium, iron, silver, lead and many other base metals from their respective ores. For the decomposition of the ores, smelting uses heat and chemical ...

23.2: Pyrometallurgy

Zinc smelting is the process of converting zinc ores into pure zinc. Zinc smelting has historically been more difficult than the smelting of other metals, e.g. iron, because in contrast, zinc has a low boiling point. There are two methods of smelting zinc: the pyrometallurgical process and the electrolysis process; both methods are still used ...

The Extraction of Copper

The method used to extract copper from its ores depends on the nature of the ore. Sulfide ores such as chalcopyrite ( CuFeS2 C u F e S 2) are converted to copper by a different method from silicate, carbonate or sulfate ores. Chalcopyrite (also known as copper pyrites) and similar sulfide ores are the commonest ores of copper.
