A "Stock" straight H was about 24 HP on the belt or PTO on gasoline, about 22 on kerosene when new. There were/are oversized sleeve & piston kits to improve that number. With a bit of work 30-35 HP maybe, but 27-28 is more realistic. Most any M or Super M should pull that hammermill just fine.

The unit appears extremely well built, implying it was made for truly heavy duty use. The swinging hammers are flat steel, approximately 3/4" in thickness and reversible.

Several companies made trailer pto kits years ago that were mostly a jackshaft on bearings hooked to the pto shaft and a large and small double or triple groove belt pulleys to get the right speed. Mar 29, 2013. #1. I put the jackshaft and pulleys from an MC grain dryer on an old David Bradley hammermill. If I remember correctly, the RPM is stenciled on the hammermill- "2200-3300". I can't get it up to speed with a 540 PTO, but can easily do it with 1000.

Getting rid of uneaten wasted hay in pasture
I've thought about the old tractor pto powered grinder/mixers (hammermill types) I've seen sitting unused around various farms. I've thought of acquiring one, forking old hay into it and grinding it, then spreading back onto the land as "fertilizer". That's alot of effort for probably minimal benefit.
